From the Aussie Chomps Series

Anton Stanton is a really short boy who is going into year seven. His family is really into ping-pong and so is Anton, but he really loves the guitar. On the first day of school, Anton was being called ant-boy by everyone.   His P.E teacher, Mr Barrington invents all names possible to make Anton feel bad. Mr. Barrington also puts him on the football team just to annoy him. Mrs. Livermore wants Anton to dance in a large school competetion, but Anton talks her out of it and suggests that he will play lead guitar for the school along with other school members. Mrs. Livermore agrees but she says they have to mime it or else they would get disqualified. Anton recruits people to pretend-play for the band. They practice for weeks and they start to want to learn how to actually play the instrument. Anton teaches them and they all know it by heart. The day of the show, the CD player jams so they end up playing for real. They even won a trophy. Mr. Barrington was at the show and he was so impressed that he bought the school a ping-pong table and made Anton team captain.

If there is anybody that I would like to be, then it would definitely be Eddie T.Pau. He is Anton’s guitar teacher that once made a big hit in samoa. He also has classes to teach kids who wants to learn how to learn guitar. I would like to be Eddie because he is very big in size and also big in fame. He has a blue and white guitar that i think looks cool. We are similar because we play guitar.

{February 27, 2011}   Playing With Fire

The book Playing With Fire is about a boy, Steve, who moves to a new school in a new area. He wants to be part of the teenage group. His friends want him to set a fire in a library. He cant do it because he is scared of fire He tells them he’ll do it when he comes back from holiday. On holiday He finds a fossil called the Devil’s Toenail on a beach. As soon as he touches the Devils Toenail he becomes possessed by power. He wants to do crazy things like stealing cars and knives. He thinks the stone is helping him do these things.

The title fits the book because he plays with fire many times and does a lot of dangerous things. The link from the book to the title is that he is challenged to make a fire, he was burned in a fire, he talks about flammable things, and he plays with matches to practice making a fire.

1. The Devils Toenail: This book was originally called the Devils Toenail. This was a good title as Stevie got all his power from the Devil’s Toenail.

2. Flames of Fear: He’s terrified of fire after he got burnt. Later he becomes obsessed with fire.

3.  The Devil’s Grip: The fossil had complete power over Stevie.

4. Flammable: Stevie always sees everything flammable.

5.  Devil Inferno: Stevie is taken over by the devil of fire.

Spy X

Two twins Andrew and Evie Wall move into a new town. They find out the next morning that their mother is left for a while and won’t be back until a long time. Andrew and Evie receive a parcel that included a spyglass, a key that can open any lock, and a note. The note was strange to them and they begin to wonder if their mother is okay. The twins go to meet their next-door neighbor and they find out that they have met her before on one Christmas. The old woman teaches the kids to solve codes. The kids go back to the note and solve it. The kids realize that their mother is still alive and that she needs to be in hiding because someone is after her.

The main conflicts in this book are around the character Andrew. Andrew is very shy and likes to imagine he’s in a war zone when he’s riding his bike. The other children tease him for this and they made him fall off his bike once. Andrew even has a fight with another boy called Baluko. Baluko steals Andrews bike because he doesn’t like him. These conflicts are real and happen in schools. Baluko is a bully and Andrew is different from other kids. Andrews sister is more confident and helps him find friends. The twins Andrew and Evie have a conflict with their father. He doesn’t let them visit the strange neighbor. Andrew and Evie disobey him and go to see her every night. This is a realistic conflict because parents don’t let children visit strangers.

This book is a collection of short stories for adults and teenagers. Two of my favourites are  Man from the South and The Umbrella Man. The Man from the south is about a man who is addicted to gambling. A young man says his lighter will always light. So the man from the South bets him that if he lights the lighter 10 times without missing once, he will give his cadillac to the young man. If he fails, his little finger gets chopped off. So they go up to the mans room, and the boy starts the bet. He lights the lighter for the eighth time then suddenly a lady comes in shouting at the old man. She explains to the teenager that he has done this many times, and that he has 47 fingers and lost 11 cars. She says the cadillac is not his, it is hers and he has nothing left. the young man sees her hand and sees one finger and a thumb.

The Umbrella Man starts out when a girl and her mother are waiting for a taxi, and a man comes up to them and says that he would like to sell his umbrella to them  for a pound to pay for his taxi fare. The mother takes a while to answer because she is suspicious that he is a bad man. Then she sees that he is just normal so she buys the umbrella. The man doesn’t get in a taxi, he just walks away. The mother gets mad so she follows the man to a bar. The man buys the whisky for a pound and as he walks out he steals an umbrella and repeats the process. The mother said he is clever because he doesn’t go to the same bar.

Throughout this book there are many messages and strange themes. Roald Dahl is known for writing stories that have a twist and have a dark side. In the Man from the South the author is trying to explain gambling is extremely risky, addictive, and dangerous as in this story. Gambling can be a life long addiction. The man in this story couldn’t stop his strange addiction.

This book gives us many unpredictable situations that makes us think if the people in the stories made the right choices.

The best part is when Danny rescues his father. In the middle of the night Danny realizes his dad hasn’t returned from poisoning the pheasants. Danny panics and drives to save his dad. Summary

Mak Pannakan

The Secret of the Sirens takes place in the southern regions of a fictional Great Britain in the seaside town of Hescombe. The 11-year-old Connie Lionheart is left in care by her parents to her Aunt, Evelyn. The story is about how Connie discovers that she has a special power that enables her to communicate with animals. She is able to get to know who they really are, and sense their actual being. She feels comfortable, and has a sense of belonging with them. The story is also about mythical creatures, as she discovers that her aunt is part of a hidden society that protects the creatures from discovery.  The society is in danger from Kullervo, a powerful and evil force who has mighty allies called the sirens. The sirens look like huge seagulls with the face of women.

Kullervo is gathering an army of creatures who want to reclaim their place on earth, and not be bothered by humans. They want to exterminate humans and create a new world they can live in. Connie discovers that she has an amazing power, and she, together with her friends and the Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures, have to try and save the creatures from the threat of exposure.

How is the book like my life?

The book is like my life because when I go to visit my family in England I stay in a small coastal town called stallham. We stay on the on the beach in a caravan so I can clearly imagine the setting of the story. However we don’t have a large marina to look at the boats but we do have the Norfolk broads, which has many boats. I can also imagine the seagulls and there piercing cries as I have heard them many times. Connie has a real way with animals because shes a universal who can communicate with all animals. All animals are attracted to her. I also like animals and have looked after many in my life. Connie’s aunt is part of a secret society, and my grandfather was part of two secret societies, one called The Masons, and the other called The Rosicrucian Order.

How is the book different?

The book is different from my life because it is a fantasy full of mythical creatures. Although people believe there are mythical creatures like the lochness monster there is no proof that these creatures exist and therefore I do not believe in these creatures. I don’t have magical powers like Connie or know anyone that does. Connie lives with her aunt and I do not. Her aunt was very unwelcoming and kept herself away from connie, whereas my family is always let me use their home as my own.

Title:  Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw

Author:  Jeff Kinney

Date of Publication: January 13, 2009

Pages: 217

Genre: Young adult novel

To continue from the book before, this book starts with Greg’s second semester. It begins with Greg’s New Year’s Day. Uncle Charlie gives Greg a laundry hoop and Greg’s mother starts making Greg do his own laundry. Greg doesn’t do his laundry and doesn’t plan to either. One day, Greg’s dad finds Manny’s old blanket, Tingy, and throws it away. Manny gets revenge and  uses his dad’s Civil War battlefield as a play set. Manny walks up to Greg and says Ploopy, which in Manny’s mind it’s a word that means he needs it. Greg doesn’t know what it means, so he asks to his mom, but she’s talking on the phone. She says, what is a ploopy? Then Manny starts calling Greg “ploopy” to get whatever he wants.

On Easter Sunday, Greg accidently sits on Manny’s chocolate Easter bunny. He steps out of the car with chocolate on the back of his pants. Rodrick takes off his pants and says, “He can wear my pants” as an effort to miss Easter Sunday.  Mom gives Greg her sweater to tie around his waist. In Easter church service ,Manny gets to play with the things Mom and Dad brought to entertain him, Then he whispers in Manny’s ear, “Ploopy!” Manny starts crying and Mom can’t calm him down, so they have to go home.

The Heffley’s neighbors, the Snellas, are having a half-birthday for their youngest child and they always try to film something for America’s funniest home videos. It is shows that Frank hates the performing and will do anything to get out of it. Manny throws Seth’s present into a tree because he knew that Greg would snatch it away. It was a blue knit blanket. When Greg goes to get it, his pants fall down revealing Wonder Woman underwear that he had to wear because he had nothing clean. Mr. Snella points his camera to embarrassed Greg.

The story ends as Rowley and Greg are sitting on the curb and they meet a girl named Trista. Greg thinks Trista is cute and imagines that she and himself are in Rowley’s swim club in swimsuits with Rowley serving them drinks. The book ends with Greg writing “The End” in big letters.

Question

This book made me laugh in my mind like the part when Rodrick was seen by his neighbors when he tried giving his clothes to Greg. They went passed and said “HAPPY EASTER HEFFLEYS!” Pg. 106. Another part that made me laugh was when Greg’s pants fall down. “The situation was humiliating enough, but then I realized something even WORSE. I was wearing my Wonder Woman Underoos.” Pg 210.
